What is Google’s RankBrain algorithm?
Ever wondered what is RankBrain and what is its importance when it comes to search engine optimization? Let SEO Dubai enlighten you today with the working of one of the important search engine algorithms used by Google which is better at selecting pages for a query than the Google Employees! Google has hinted that it could be the 3rd most important factor when it comes to determining the position of a website in the search results.
Google confirmed the usage of RankBrain on 26th October 2015 as a self learning artificial intelligence system used to refine and provide more relevant search results for users thereby enhancing their search experience. It learns by processing a huge amount of historical data of search queries and is able to learn and refine the best matching results, relationship between the keywords and connected patterns between the queries. RankBrain embeds large amounts of text into mathematical entities, called vectors for the computers to understand and process the data. Google confirmed that it is used for less than 15% of the search queries currently and the algorithm is Globally live. We can infer that it is somewhat similar or can be a part of Google’s Hummingbird algorithm which is able to provide better results for the search queries taking into account the meaning of the search query along with the intent of the user rather than simply matching the keywords in the query. RankBrain effectively handles newer search queries by interpreting the meaning of the words in the query to filter out and display the best matching pages in the search results. An to make things better, it is learning from every query and this algorithm is evolving everyday! This is the best example of Artificial intelligence, isn’t it?
Now Google uses relevant high quality content, dofollow backlinks and RankBrain’s results to decide the ranking position of a website in the search engine results page.Bloomberg article quotes in an interview with Greg Carrado, Director of AI Research at Google :
RankBrain is one of the “hundreds” of signals that go into an algorithm that determines what results appear on a Google search page and where they are ranked, Corrado said. In the few months it has been deployed, RankBrain has become the third-most important signal contributing to the result of a search query, he said.
We can infer that RankBrain takes the “meaning of the query” into consideration, hence exact match keywords in the title or description of a web page isn’t going to give it a ranking boost in the search results unless the content in the page is of very high quality and will satisfy the user’s expectation when he visits the page. Click-through rate of a result in the search engine result pages will help RankBrain to understand the result that users find to be satisfactory. Hence it is important to use proper, helpful meta title and description summarizing the topic of the page. Google prefers to be conservative about disclosing its algorithm updates. But we can clearly come to a conclusion that Google is not only taking content and backlinks as a ranking factor but is also taking into account what users prefer more in the search results through this brainy algorithm!
